Trevor Keen

Upon Reflection (AR-16)

RELEASE DATE: November 2, 2018

AR16_Poster_1500.jpg

The latest Atlantic Rhythms release, Upon Reflection, is a full-length cassette of whirling experimental house originals by Washington, DC’s disc jockey journeyman and producer, Trevor Keen. The six tracks on ‘Upon Reflection’ trek an impressive terrain of styles, but remain tethered to the producer's rhythmic sensibilities honed from years of helming parties like Private Joy and Modern Class and becoming a reliable mainstay for local clubs like Flash and Jimmy Valentines. From the massive opener, “Guildford Ave 2,” to the refried-acid of “Cutoff Slopes” and “Untitled 303,” to the off-kilter bubble of “Cascading Sunset,” Keen is shaping a psychedelic style all his own.

Next up on Atlantic Rhythms is Cheap Storage, an album of rainy day electronics and left-field beat inquiries from Los Angeles-based producer, DJ, and music scribe, Maymind. The seven tracks on Cheap Storage were recorded live and in an improvisatory mode, making the most out of a limited set of tools — an MPC sampler / sequencer, a few small synthesizers, and a cheap vocal mic. The resulting textures are varied yet always hypnotic, and place groove and blunted atmospherics on equal footing.

Cheap Storage was made in 2017, in Maymind's first apartment on the east side of Los Angeles, though it's named for a different place altogether - the converted warehouse in Brooklyn, NY where Maymind previously resided. It was there that his solo project began in earnest with the release of the Prophet EP on Berlin's New Kanada, followed by last year's Illumina on Mexico City's Umor Rex.

A limited edition cassette and digital version will be available exclusively through our Bandcamp site on August 24, 2018.

AR10_Poster_Small.jpg

Jadelain is a Queens-based musician and producer channeling environmental and ambient music through mystical melodies and collected memories. Unravel, Jadelain’s first collection of original compositions for Atlantic Rhythms, uniquely and expertly weaves disparate influences from video game music; the company of familiar ghosts; percussive club music; as well as years of studying upright bass and jazz performance. It’s a sound of singularity - one of humanity and technology - bursting as one with heart, melancholy, and playfulness.

Side A/B: Low Star, Prog Rock, Lake Walk Theme, Unravel, Father in the Trees

Everything on Unravel is written, recorded, and produced in a program called Guitar Pro, a type of notation software favored by metal bands, of which they started using at age 14. Growing beyond early experiments with the software’s use in their screamo projects, Jadelain found working with the program’s MIDI sounds and workflow evolved into percussive compositions more in common with ambient and textural sounds. For years now, Jadelain has used the program, perfecting the unconventional approach as both a composition and performance tool.

Unravel is the tenth release on Atlantic Rhythms, and will be released as a limited edition cassette tape (only 100 physical copies with digital download code), as well as a full-sized, hand-screened poster. The tape, poster, and digital versions of the album will be available exclusively at the Atlantic Rhyhtms Bandcamp website on March 13, 2018.

AARON LEITKO

WASATCH MECHA (AR-02)

RELEASE DATE: October 7, 2016

Aaron Leitko is a musician and writer based in Washington, D.C. He is a member of electronic duo Protect-U and has released music through Future Times, Planet Mu, and Mea Kusma. Wasatch Mecha gathers a number of Eurorack synthesizer pieces Leitko recorded in Spring 2015. Some were arranged and overdubbed in the studio, while others were improvised and recorded live. "FDK02" layers variations of a single melody played back using sounds generated via physical modeling. "Harmony Gold" uses notes drawn from Ethiopian Tizita ballads to create a tuneful counterpart to a rhythmic foundation of abstract digital crunch. The tape's title refers to both the Utah-Idaho mountain range and the '80s cartoon series Robotech. The latter provided indirect inspiration through its combination of hi-tech design and melodramatic storyline -- a blending of sentimentality and mechanized grace.

Side A: Flip Flops (This Can't Happen), 0505#4, Downtown Protoculture, Extended Family (Edit)

Side B: FDK02, 0505#6, Harmony Gold

Wasatch Mecha is the second release on Atlantic Rhythms. The tape is limited to 100 physical copies, which all include a digital download code. Alternatively, 25 full-sized, hand-screened posters were produced, which will also include a digital download code with purchase. And, finally, a digital version of the album will be available exclusively through Bandcamp on October 7, 2016.

TOWN (Arto Lindsay/Sam Hillmer Duo)

LIVE AT TRANS-PECOS (AR-01)

RELEASE DATE: October 7, 2016

TOWN is a collaboration between saxophonist Sam Hillmer (Zs) and guitarist/composer Arto Lindsay (DNA). This cassette collects three improvisations performed in January, 2015 at Trans-Pecos in Queens, NY. The music is, by turns, abrasive and atmospheric. Hillmer and Lindsay explore silences and negative space. In other moments, the duo generate a flood of sonic detail and weirdo beauty from sustained cacophony.  Hillmer is a musician, artist, and curator living in Brooklyn, NY.  He is a founder of seminal Brooklyn noise band/chamber ensemble ZS. Lindsay was a founding member of DNA -- arguably the most important band from New York’s No Wave scene. He is a well-known figure in Brazilian pop, a collaborator with Matthew Barney, a leader of parades, and a thrower of sounds in space.

Side A/B: Live At Trans-Pecos Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3

Three guitar/saxophone improvisations - both blistering and atmospheric - from experimental composer Arto Lindsay and saxophone troubadour Sam Hillmer. Together the two call this collaboration TOWN. Performed live in January 2015, these three pieces document the second of a special two-night set for Lindsay, a No Wave legend, at the revered Queens venue Trans-Pecos.

Live at Trans-Pecos is the first release on Atlantic Rhythms. The tape is limited to 200 physical copies, which all include a digital download code. Alternatively, 25 full-sized, hand-screened posters were produced, which will also include a digital download code with purchase. And, finally, a digital-only version of the album will be available exclusively through Bandcamp on October 7, 2016.
